What Is 3D Scanning?

What Is 3D Scanning?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions we get from our new clients. With more than 20 years of experience in the building information industry, we are your go-to source for getting the answers - and solutions - you need.

What is 3D scanning?

3D laser scanning is a way of capturing and creating a digital footprint of a physical structure. In less than two minutes, our small and lightweight laser scanning equipment collects up to 2 million points per second, gathering real-time measurements and information from a site. This type of reality capture automatically collects point cloud data in the field that serves a variety of purposes.

We use laser scanning technology that is portable, fast, and precise to ensure you get the most accurate information in the fastest time with minimal interruptions. By getting the most precise measurements of a given space, it can then be transformed into an accurate 3D model. With these 3D environments on hand, projects become more efficient, productive, and accurate.

What are the benefits of laser scanning?

The benefits of 3D laser scanning over other measurements are nothing short of impressive. The information captured by a 3D laser scanner is richer and more accurate than any other method, and even better, it can be done in the blink of an eye. In fact, a single laser scanner can capture up to a million 3D data points per second.

Thanks to the incredibly precise and accurate information obtained from 3D laser scanning, shut-down times and operational interruptions for clients are minimized. With the accuracy of the information on your side, 3D laser scanning also helps you avoid the cost of equipment rentals and manual measurement, as well as major project delays and interruptions.

Is it safe?

Existing Conditions has many 3D laser scanners in our inventory of equipment. The scanners are "Class 1,” which means they are no more powerful than a supermarket checkout laser’s scanner. These lasers pose no harm to people or buildings. The scanner hardware itself is portable and quiet. It can be used around people so there will not be any need to limit your on-site operations. We also use small, professional, uniformed crews who are discrete and do not disturb tenants or clients.

Laser scanning is a safe process used in the building industry for more than 20 years. We have no doubt that this process will be safe and successful when you rely on Existing Conditions for your building information modeling needs.
